  • Matt 13:1-9 : 1 On that day, Jesus left the house and sat by the sea. 2 Large crowds gathered around him, so he got into a boat and sat down. Meanwhile, the entire crowd stood on the shore. 3 Then he spoke many things to them in parables, saying, "Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 As he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them. 5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where there was not much soil. They sprouted quickly because the soil was not deep. 6 But when the sun rose, they were scorched, and since they had no roots, they withered away. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns, which grew up and choked them. 8 Still other seeds fell on good soil and yielded a crop—some one hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times what was sown. 9 Let anyone who has ears listen. 10 Then the disciples approached him and asked, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" 11 Jesus replied, "The mysteries of the kingdom of heaven have been given to you to know, but not to them. 12 For whoever has, more will be given to them, and they will have abundance. But whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken away from them. 13 That is why I speak to them in parables, because although they see, they do not see; and although they hear, they do not hear or understand. 14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says: 'You will indeed hear but never understand; you will indeed see but never perceive.' 15 For the heart of this people has grown dull; they can barely hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise, they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, turn back to me, and I would heal them.
  • Luke 8:4-9 : 4 When a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Him from every city, He spoke in a parable: 5 A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some fell along the path; it was stepped on, and the birds of the sky devoured it. 6 Other seed fell on rocky ground, and when it grew up, it withered because it had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times what was sown. As He said this, He cried out, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear." 9 Then His disciples asked Him, "What does this parable mean?" 10 And He said, "The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to others, I speak in parables so that, ‘Though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’

A sower went out to sow. 4 As he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it didn’t have much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, so it didn’t produce any grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It grew, producing fruit that increased and yielded thirty, sixty, and a hundred times what was sown. 9 Then Jesus said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear." 10 When he was alone, those around him, along with the twelve, asked him about the parable. 11 He answered them, "The mystery of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to those outside, everything is spoken in parables. 12 "So that, 'Though they see, they may see and not perceive; and though they hear, they may hear and not understand; otherwise they might turn back and be forgiven.'
