I am driving out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 12 Be careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, or they will become a snare in your midst. 13 Instead, you must destroy their altars, smash their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherah poles. 14 For you must not worship any other god, because the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. 15 Be careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you, and you will eat from their sacrifices. 16 And when you take some of their daughters as wives for your sons, their daughters will lead your sons to prostitute themselves to their gods.

All of them have been fulfilled for you; not one word has failed. 15 But just as all the good things the LORD your God promised you have come to pass, so too the LORD will bring upon you the bad things He threatened, until He has destroyed you from this good land that the LORD your God has given you. 16 If you violate the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land He has given you.

Do not seek their peace or prosperity forever, so that you may be strong, eat the good things of the land, and leave it to your children as an inheritance forever. 13 After everything that has happened to us because of our evil deeds and great guilt—though you, our God, have punished us less than our sins deserved and have given us a remnant like this— 14 shall we again break your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who commit these abominations?
