- Matt 3:1-9 : 1 At that time, John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 and saying, 'Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.' 3 This is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: 'A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight.' 4 Now John himself had a garment made of camel’s hair, and a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then people from Jerusalem, all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan were going out to him, 6 and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, 'You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. 10 Even now the axe is laid at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to stop Him, saying, 'I need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?' 15 Jesus answered him, 'Allow it for now, because this is the proper way for us to fulfill all righteousness.' Then John allowed Him. 16 After Jesus was baptized, He immediately came up from the water. At that moment, the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'
- Mark 1:1-9 : 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the prophets: 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' 3 'A voice is calling out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight.' 4 John appeared in the wilderness, baptizing and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem came out to him. They were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. 6 John was dressed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed: 'After me comes one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.' 8 'I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.' 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: 'You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.'
- Mark 9:13 : 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, just as it is written about him.
- Luke 3:1-9 : 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. 3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'" 5 Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low; the crooked paths will become straight, and the rough ways will be made smooth, 6 and all humanity will see God's salvation. 7 John said to the crowds coming to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?" 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. 9 The axe is already laid at the root of the trees, so every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 10 The crowds were asking him, "What, then, should we do?" 11 He replied to them, "Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food must do the same." 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" 13 He told them, "Do not collect anything more than what is required." 14 Then some soldiers also questioned him, saying, "And what should we do?" He replied to them, "Do not extort money from anyone or accuse anyone falsely; be content with your wages." 15 As the people were waiting expectantly and all were pondering in their hearts about John, whether he might be the Christ, 16 John answered them all by saying, "I baptize you with water, but one who is mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to thoroughly clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." 18 And in many other ways, with various exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by John about Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, and for all the evil things he had done, 20 added to these things by imprisoning John in prison as well.
- John 1:6-8 : 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe. 8 He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
- John 1:15-36 : 15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, 'This is the one I spoke about when I said, “He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.”' 16 From His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the one and only Son, who is in the closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known. 19 This is the testimony of John when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?' 20 He confessed and did not deny, but confessed, 'I am not the Christ.' 21 They asked him, 'Then who are you? Are you Elijah?' He said, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.' 22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? Tell us so we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?' 23 He replied, 'I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Make straight the way for the Lord,” as the prophet Isaiah said.' 24 Now those who had been sent were from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, 'Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?' 26 John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know.' 27 He is the one who comes after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie. 28 This all happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!' 30 This is the one I was talking about when I said, “A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.” 31 I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel. 32 Then John testified, saying, 'I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him.' 33 I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' 34 I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. 35 The next day John was standing there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, 'Look, the Lamb of God!'
- John 3:25-36 : 25 Then a dispute arose between John’s disciples and a Jew about purification. 26 So they came to John and said to him, 'Rabbi, the one who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you testified—look, He is baptizing, and everyone is coming to Him.' 27 John replied, 'No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.' 28 'You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent ahead of Him.’ 29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly at the sound of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore, this joy of mine is now complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease. 31 The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what He has seen and heard, yet no one accepts His testimony. 33 Whoever accepts His testimony certifies that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in His hands. 36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. But the one who disobeys the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.
