Why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You lay the burden of all these people on me? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give birth to them? Why do You tell me to carry them in my arms, like a nurse carries an infant, to the land You promised their ancestors? 13 Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep crying to me, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If this is how You are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me—if I have found favor in Your eyes—and do not let me see my misery. 16 The LORD said to Moses, 'Gather seventy men from the elders of Israel whom you know to be leaders of the people and their officials. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting, and have them stand there with you.' 17 I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it alone. 18 Tell the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat. The LORD heard you when you wailed, ‘If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!’ Now the LORD will give you meat to eat, and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten, or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you—because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have wailed before Him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’ 21 But Moses said, 'Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and You say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month’? 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Or if all the fish in the sea were gathered for them, would that be enough?' 23 The LORD answered Moses, 'Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.' 24 So Moses went out and told the people what the LORD had said. He gathered seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent. 25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but they never did so again. 26 Two men, Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders but had not gone out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit rested on them as well, and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and reported to Moses, 'Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!' 28 Then Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' assistant since his youth, spoke up and said, 'My lord Moses, stop them!' 29 But Moses replied, 'Are you jealous on my behalf? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put His Spirit on them!' 30 Then Moses returned to the camp along with the elders of Israel. 31 Now a wind sent by the LORD drove in quail from the sea and scattered them around the camp to a depth of about two cubits over the ground, as far as a day's walk in any direction around the camp. 32 All that day, night, and the following day, the people went out and gathered quail. The one who gathered the least still collected ten homers. Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it was consumed, the anger of the LORD burned against the people, and He struck them with a severe plague. 34 So they named that place Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved meat. 35 From Kibroth Hattaavah, the people journeyed to Hazeroth and stayed there.

Turn from your burning anger and relent concerning this disaster against your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants to whom you swore by yourself: 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and I will give your descendants all this land that I have promised, and they shall inherit it forever.' 14 So the LORD relented concerning the disaster He had said He would bring on His people. 15 Then Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hands—tablets that were inscribed on both sides, front and back. 16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, "There is the sound of war in the camp." 18 But Moses replied, "It is not the sound of victory, nor is it the sound of defeat; I hear the sound of singing." 19 As Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned, and he threw the tablets out of his hands, shattering them at the foot of the mountain. 20 He took the calf they had made, burned it with fire, ground it to powder, scattered it on the water, and made the Israelites drink it. 21 Then Moses said to Aaron, "What did these people do to you that you led them into such a great sin?" 22 Aaron replied, "Do not let my lord's anger burn hot. You know these people yourself, that they are bent on evil. 23 They said to me, 'Make gods for us who will go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.' 24 So I told them, 'Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.' They gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!" 25 Moses saw that the people were out of control—for Aaron had let them get out of control, to the mockery of their enemies. 26 So Moses stood at the gate of the camp and said, "Whoever is for the LORD, come to me!" And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. 27 Then he said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Each man put his sword on his side. Go back and forth through the camp, from gate to gate, and kill your brother, your friend, and your neighbor.'" 28 The sons of Levi did as Moses commanded, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day. 29 Then Moses said, "Today you have been set apart for the LORD, for each of you has gone against your own son and brother, so that He might bestow a blessing on you this day." 30 The next day Moses said to the people, "You have committed a great sin. Now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin." 31 So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Oh, this people have committed a great sin; they have made themselves gods of gold. 32 But now, if You will forgive their sin, please do so. But if not, then blot me out of the book You have written." 33 The LORD replied to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot out of My book. 34 Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke to you about. My angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin." 35 Then the LORD struck the people with a plague, because of what they had done with the calf Aaron had made.

Wouldn't it be better for us to return to Egypt? 4 And they said to each other, "Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt. 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown before the entire assembly of the Israelite community. 6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes. 7 And they said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. 8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us—a land flowing with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them. Their protection is gone, and the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them. 10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all the signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, and I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they. 13 But Moses said to the LORD, "The Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. 14 They will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, LORD, are among these people, that you, LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 15 If you put all these people to death as one man, the nations who have heard about your fame will say, 16 'The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.' 17 Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 'The LORD is slow to anger, abundant in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and rebellion; yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers' iniquity upon the children to the third and fourth generation.' 19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now. 20 The LORD replied, 'I have forgiven them, as you asked.' 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, 22 none of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times, 23 not one of them will see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has spurned me will see it. 24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and has followed me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. 25 The Amalekites and Canaanites are dwelling in the valley. Tomorrow, turn around and set out toward the wilderness along the way of the Red Sea. 26 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 27 How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of the Israelites, who are murmuring against me. 28 Say to them: 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say in my hearing.' 29 In this wilderness, your dead bodies will fall—every one of you who was numbered in the census, twenty years old or more, who grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore by uplifted hand to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 31 But your children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them in to know the land that you have rejected. 32 As for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, bearing the consequences of your unfaithfulness, until your corpses are consumed in the wilderness. 34 For forty days you explored the land; now, for each day, you will bear your guilt for a year—forty years—and you will know my opposition. 35 I, the LORD, have spoken. I will surely do this to this entire wicked community who conspired against me; they will meet their end in this wilderness, and here they will die. 36 The men whom Moses had sent to explore the land, and who returned and caused the whole assembly to complain by spreading a bad report about the land— 37 those men who spread the bad report about the land were struck down by a plague before the LORD. 38 But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, survived. 39 When Moses relayed these words to all the Israelites, the people mourned greatly. 40 Early the next morning they set out toward the top of the hill and said, 'Here we are! We are ready to go up to the place the LORD promised, for we have sinned.' 41 But Moses said, 'Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed. 42 Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you; you will be defeated by your enemies.' 43 For the Amalekites and Canaanites are there to confront you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you have turned away from the LORD, He will not be with you. 44 Nevertheless, in their presumption, they went up toward the top of the hill, but neither the ark of the LORD's covenant nor Moses moved from the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down, attacked them, and routed them as far as Hormah.

The one He chooses, He will bring near to Himself. 6 "Do this: Take censers for yourselves, Korah and all your followers. 7 Put fire in them and place incense on them in the presence of the Lord tomorrow. The man the Lord chooses will be the holy one. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!" 8 Moses also said to Korah, "Listen now, you sons of Levi! 9 Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the rest of the Israelite community to bring you near to Himself to do the work of the Lord's tabernacle and to stand before the assembly to minister to them? 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near to Him, but now you are demanding the priesthood as well! 11 Therefore, it is against the Lord that you and all your followers have gathered. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?" 12 Then Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, "We will not come! 13 Isn't it enough that you brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Must you also lord it over us? 14 What's more, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor have you given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you intend to gouge out the eyes of these men? We will not come!" 15 Moses was very angry and said to the Lord, "Do not accept their offering. I have not taken even a single donkey from them, nor have I wronged any one of them." 16 Moses said to Korah, "You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you, they, and Aaron. 17 Each man is to take his censer, put incense in it, and present it before the Lord—250 censers in all. You and Aaron are also to do the same, each with his censer. 18 So each of them took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 When Korah had assembled the entire community against them at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the Lord appeared to the whole assembly. 20 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 21 "Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once." 22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, "O God, the God who gives breath to all living things, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?" 23 Then the Lord said to Moses, 24 "Say to the assembly, 'Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'" 25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 He warned the assembly, "Move away from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins." 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children, and little ones at the entrances to their tents. 28 Then Moses said, "This is how you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my own idea: 29 If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the Lord has not sent me. 30 But if the Lord brings about something unprecedented and the ground opens its mouth to swallow them and everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt. 31 As soon as he finished speaking all these words, the ground beneath them split apart. 32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, along with all of Korah's men and all their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished from the community. 34 All the Israelites around them ran away at their cries, saying, 'The earth might swallow us too!' 35 Then fire came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were offering incense.

Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped. 9 But those who died in the plague numbered twenty-four thousand. 10 The LORD said to Moses, 11 'Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the Israelites by being as zealous as I am for my honor among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in my zeal.' 12 Therefore tell him, 'I am giving him my covenant of peace.' 13 'It will be a covenant of an everlasting priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.' 14 The name of the Israelite man who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, a leader of a Simeonite family. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a family in Midian. 16 The LORD said to Moses, 17 ‘Treat the Midianites as enemies and strike them down. 18 For they treated you as enemies with their deceit, which they used to lure you away to worship Baal of Peor, and because of Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, their kinswoman, who was killed on the day of the plague that struck because of Peor.’

Let all the people say, 'Amen!' Praise the LORD!
