  • Judg 14:1-9 : 1 Samson went down to Timnah, and there he saw a woman from among the daughters of the Philistines. 2 He returned and told his father and mother, 'I have seen a woman in Timnah from the daughters of the Philistines. Now get her for me as a wife.' 3 But his father and mother said to him, 'Is there no woman among the daughters of your relatives or among all our people, that you must go and take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?' Yet Samson said to his father, 'Get her for me, because she is right in my eyes.' 4 Now his father and mother did not know that this was from the LORD, for he was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines. At that time, the Philistines were ruling over Israel. 5 Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother. When they came to the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. 6 The Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one might tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down and spoke to the woman, and she pleased Samson. 8 Later, when he returned to marry her, he turned aside to look at the lion’s carcass. Inside it, he saw a swarm of bees and some honey. 9 He scooped the honey into his hands and ate it as he went along. When he returned to his father and mother, he gave them some, and they ate it too. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the carcass of the lion. 10 His father went down to the woman, and Samson prepared a feast there, as was customary for young men. 11 When the people saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. 12 Samson said to them, 'Let me now pose a riddle to you. If you can tell me the answer within the seven days of the feast and solve it, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothing. 13 But if you cannot solve it, then you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothing.' And they said to him, 'Pose your riddle, and we will hear it.' 14 So he said to them, 'Out of the eater came something to eat, and out of the strong came something sweet.' But for three days they could not solve the riddle. 15 On the fourth day, they said to Samson’s wife, 'Entice your husband to tell us the riddle, or we will burn you and your father’s household with fire. Did you invite us here to impoverish us?'
  • Judg 16:22-30 : 22 But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved. 23 The rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate, saying, 'Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands.' 24 When the people saw him, they praised their god, saying, 'Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy, the one who ruined our land and killed so many of us.' 25 While they were in high spirits, they shouted, 'Bring out Samson to entertain us!' So they brought Samson from the prison, and he performed for them. They made him stand between the pillars. 26 Samson said to the servant who held his hand, 'Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.' 27 Now the temple was crowded with men and women. All the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. 28 Then Samson called to the LORD, 'Sovereign LORD, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.' 29 Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on one and his left hand on the other, 30 Samson said, 'Let me die with the Philistines!' Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. So he killed many more when he died than while he lived.
  • Judg 18:22-31 : 22 When they had gone some distance from Micah’s house, the men who lived near Micah gathered together and overtook the Danites. 23 They called out to the Danites, who turned to face them, and said to Micah, 'What’s the matter with you, that you have called your men together?' 24 Micah replied, 'You’ve taken my gods that I made and my priest and gone away! What else do I have? How can you ask me, “What’s the matter with you?”' 25 The Danites said to him, 'Don’t raise your voice with us, or some bitter-tempered men might attack you, and you and your family could lose your lives.' 26 So the Danites continued on their way, and when Micah saw that they were stronger than he was, he turned and went back to his house. 27 The Danites took what Micah had made, along with his priest, and came to Laish, to a peaceful and unsuspecting people. They struck them down with the sword and burned the city with fire. 28 There was no one to rescue the people of Laish because they were far from Sidon and had no alliances with anyone. The city was situated in a valley near Beth-rehob. The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there. 29 They named the city Dan, after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel. However, the city had been named Laish previously. 30 The Danites set up for themselves the carved image, and Jonathan, son of Gershom, the son of Moses, along with his sons, served as priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the land’s captivity. 31 They kept the carved image that Micah had made throughout the time the house of God was in Shiloh.
