  • Matt 23:15-28 : 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as you are. 16 Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.' 17 You fools and blind! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? 18 And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is obligated.' 19 You fools and blind! Which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 Therefore, whoever swears by the altar swears by it and everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by the One who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You tithe mint, dill, and cumin but have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These you ought to have done without neglecting the others. 24 Blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the dish, so that the outside may also become clean. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside but inside are full of the bones of the dead and all impurity. 28 So too, on the outside you appear righteous to people, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  • Mark 7:1-9 : 1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, gathered around Him. 2 They saw some of His disciples eating bread with unclean, that is, unwashed hands, and they criticized them. 3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands carefully, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 And when they return from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. They also observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and dining couches. 5 So the Pharisees and the scribes questioned Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed hands?" 6 He answered them, "Isaiah rightly prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.' 7 They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. 8 You have abandoned the commandment of God and hold onto human traditions, including the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other similar things." 9 He also said to them, "How skillfully you set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.' 11 But you say, 'If anyone says to his father or mother, "Whatever help you might have received from me is Corban"' (that is, devoted to God), 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother. 13 You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that." 14 Then He called the crowd to Him and said, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing outside a person that can defile him by going into him, but the things that come out of him are what defile him. 16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear." 17 When He went into the house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him about the parable. 18 And He said to them, "Are you also without understanding? Do you not realize that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him? 19 For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then it goes out into the latrine." (In saying this, He declared all foods clean.) 20 And He continued, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the human heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders, 22 adulteries, greed, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. 23 All these evils come from within and defile a person.
