Then he permitted him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, came up immediately out of the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him: 17 And behold, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

  • Luke 3:1-9 : 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the country around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 7 Then he said to the multitude that came forth to be baptized by him, O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father: for I say to you, That God is able out of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore that does not produce good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. 10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11 He answered and said to them, He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise. 12 Then the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do? 13 And he said to them, Collect no more than what is appointed to you. 14 And the soldiers likewise asked of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said to them, Do violence to no man, nor accuse anyone falsely; and be content with your wages. 15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men pondered in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not; 16 John answered, saying to them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I comes, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire: 17 Whose winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 18 So, with many other exhortations, he preached to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him for Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. 21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized, and while praying, the heavens were opened, 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased. 23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 The son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, 25 The son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26 The son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda, 27 The son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 The son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, 29 The son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 The son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, 31 The son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 The son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, 33 The son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 The son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35 The son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 36 The son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 The son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan, 38 The son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

  • John 1:19-36 : 19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21 And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No. 22 Then they said to him, Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? 23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah. 24 Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, and said to him, Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet? 26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands one among you whom you do not know. 27 It is he who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. 28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. 30 This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me. 31 I did not know him, but that he should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water. 32 And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained upon him. 33 I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. 35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God!
