Foreigners will join them and be united with the house of Jacob. 2 Nations will take them and bring them to their own place. Then the house of Israel will possess them in the LORD's land as male and female servants. They will take captives of their captors and rule over their oppressors. 3 On the day the LORD gives you rest from your pain, your turmoil, and the harsh labor imposed on you, 4 you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon: How the oppressor has ceased! How the arrogance has ended! 5 The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, 6 which struck the nations in anger with unending blows, that subdued the nations in wrath, with relentless persecution. 7 The whole earth is at rest and at peace; they break forth into singing. 8 Even the cypresses rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, 'Since you were laid low, no woodcutter comes against us.' 9 Sheol below stirs up to meet you at your coming; it rouses the spirits of the dead—all the leaders of the earth—and raises from their thrones all the kings of the nations. 10 They all respond and say to you, 'You too have become weak as we are; you have become like us!' 11 Your pride has been brought down to Sheol, along with the music of your harps. Beneath you is a bed of maggots, and worms cover you. 12 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, you who laid low the nations. 13 You said in your heart, 'I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the north.' 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. 15 But you will be brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the pit. 16 Those who see you will stare at you; they will contemplate you, saying, 'Is this the man who made the earth tremble and shook the kingdoms?' 17 Who made the world a desert and destroyed its cities, who refused to release his prisoners to their homes?' 18 All the kings of the nations lie in glory, each in his own tomb, 19 but you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch, clothed with the slain, those pierced by the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit, like a corpse trampled underfoot. 20 You will not be joined with them in burial, because you have destroyed your land and slain your people. The offspring of evildoers will never be remembered. 21 Prepare a place of slaughter for his sons because of the iniquity of their fathers. Let them not rise to possess the land or fill the face of the earth with cities. 22 'I will rise up against them,' declares the LORD of Hosts, 'and I will cut off from Babylon her name and survivors, her offspring and descendants,' declares the LORD. 23 I will make her a possession for hedgehogs and swamps of water, and I will sweep her away with the broom of destruction,' declares the LORD of Hosts. 24 The LORD of Hosts has sworn: 'Surely as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand.' 25 I will break Assyria in My land and trample him on My mountains. Then his yoke will be taken off their shoulders, and his burden removed from their necks. 26 This is the plan determined for the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out over all the nations. 27 For the LORD of Hosts has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?
  • Jer 25:12-16 : 12 'But when the seventy years are completed,' declares the LORD, 'I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their guilt, and I will make it desolate forever.' 13 I will bring upon that land everything I have spoken against it, all that is written in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. 14 For many nations and great kings will make them serve, and I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands. 15 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: 'Take this cup of the wine of wrath from my hand and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.' 16 They will drink, stagger, and act like madmen because of the sword I am sending among them.
  • Jer 25:29 : 29 For behold, I am bringing disaster on the city that bears my name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of Hosts.

  • Jer 51:24-26 : 24 Before your eyes, I will repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all the evil they have done in Zion, declares the Lord. 25 Behold, I am against you, the destroying mountain, declares the Lord, you who destroy the whole earth. I will stretch out My hand against you, roll you off the cliffs, and make you a burned-out mountain. 26 No stone will be taken from you for a cornerstone or foundation, for you will be desolate forever, declares the Lord.
  • Jer 51:34-37 : 34 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured me; he has crushed me. He has made me an empty vessel. He has swallowed me like a monster; he filled his belly with my delicacies. He has rinsed me out. 35 May the violence done to me and my flesh be upon Babylon, says the inhabitant of Zion. May my blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea, says Jerusalem. 36 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: 'Behold, I will defend your cause and take vengeance for you. I will dry up her sea and make her fountains dry.' 37 Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt for jackals, a horror and an object of scorn, without inhabitant.
  • Lam 3:54-66 : 54 Waters flowed over my head; I thought, 'I am cut off.' 55 I called on Your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit. 56 You heard my plea: 'Do not close Your ear to my cry for relief.' 57 You came near when I called on You, and You said, 'Do not fear.' 58 You have pleaded my cause, O Lord; You have redeemed my life. 59 You have seen my wrong, O LORD; judge my case. 60 You have seen all their vengeance, all their plans against me. 61 You have heard their insults, O LORD, all their plots against me. 62 The lips of my adversaries and their murmuring are against me all day long. 63 Look at their sitting and their rising; I am the subject of their mocking song. 64 Repay them, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. 65 Give them hardness of heart; may Your curse be upon them. 66 You will pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
