If you can tell me the answer within the seven days of the feast and solve it, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothing. 13 But if you cannot solve it, then you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothing.' And they said to him, 'Pose your riddle, and we will hear it.' 14 So he said to them, 'Out of the eater came something to eat, and out of the strong came something sweet.' But for three days they could not solve the riddle. 15 On the fourth day, they said to Samson’s wife, 'Entice your husband to tell us the riddle, or we will burn you and your father’s household with fire. Did you invite us here to impoverish us?' 16 So Samson’s wife wept before him and said, 'You only hate me; you do not love me. You have posed a riddle to my people, but you have not told me the answer.' He replied, 'I have not even told it to my father or mother; why should I tell you?'

They realized that the Ark of the Lord had come into the camp.
• 1 Sam 13:1-9 : 1 Saul was [about] a year into his reign when he became king, and he ruled over Israel for two years. 2 Saul chose 3,000 men from Israel for himself. 2,000 were with Saul at Michmash and in the hills of Bethel, and 1,000 were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent back to their homes. 3 Jonathan attacked the Philistine garrison at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul blew the ram's horn throughout the land, saying, "Let the Hebrews hear!" 4 All Israel heard the news: "Saul has attacked the Philistine garrison, and now Israel has become offensive to the Philistines." So the people were summoned to follow Saul at Gilgal. 5 The Philistines assembled to fight Israel with 30,000 chariots, 6,000 horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and camped at Michmash, east of Beth Aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a difficult situation and that the enemy was pressing them hard, they hid themselves in caves, thickets, rocks, pits, and cisterns. 7 Some Hebrews crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead. But Saul remained in Gilgal, and all the people with him trembled in fear. 8 He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people started to scatter from Saul. 9 So Saul said, "Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings." And he offered the burnt offering. 10 Just as he finished offering the burnt sacrifice, Samuel came. Saul went out to meet him and to greet him. 11 Samuel said, "What have you done?" Saul answered, "When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and you did not come within the appointed days, and that the Philistines were assembling at Michmash, 12 I said, 'Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.' So I forced myself and offered the burnt offering." 13 Samuel said to Saul, "You have acted foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, which He gave you. If you had, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom will not endure. The Lord has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him leader over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you."

They camped between Socoh and Azekah, at Ephes-dammim. 2 Saul and the men of Israel also gathered and camped in the Valley of Elah, arranging themselves for battle against the Philistines. 3 The Philistines stood on one hill, and Israel stood on another hill, with the valley between them. 4 Then a champion emerged from the Philistine camp, named Goliath, from Gath. His height was six cubits and a span. 5 He wore a bronze helmet on his head and a coat of scale armor that weighed five thousand shekels of bronze. 6 He also wore bronze greaves on his legs and carried a bronze javelin slung between his shoulders. 7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and its iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels. His shield-bearer went ahead of him. 8 Goliath stood and called out to the ranks of Israel, saying, 'Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.' 9 If he is able to fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I defeat him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us. 10 The Philistine continued, 'I defy the armies of Israel this day. Give me a man so we can fight each other.' 11 When Saul and all Israel heard the words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid. 12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite man named Jesse from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul's time, he was old and advanced in years. 13 Jesse's three oldest sons had followed Saul to the battle. The names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab, the firstborn; Abinadab, the second; and Shammah, the third. 14 David was the youngest, and the three oldest had followed Saul. 15 But David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep in Bethlehem. 16 The Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand for forty days. 17 Jesse said to his son David, 'Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp.' 18 Also take these ten cuts of cheese to the commander of their unit. Check on the well-being of your brothers and bring back some assurance from them. 19 Saul, your brothers, and the men of Israel are in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines. 20 Early in the morning, David left the flock with a keeper, loaded up, and set out as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines, facing each other. 22 David left his supplies in the care of the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines, and asked his brothers how they were. 23 As he was speaking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual words, and David heard them. 24 When the men of Israel saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear. 25 The Israelites said, 'Have you seen this man who comes out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him; he will also give him his daughter in marriage and exempt his family from taxes in Israel.' 26 David said to the men standing with him, 'What will be done for the man who strikes down this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?' 27 The people repeated to him what they had been saying: 'This is what will be done for the man who kills him.' 28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking to the men, he became angry with David and said, 'Why have you come down here? And who did you leave those few sheep with in the wilderness? I know your pride and the wickedness of your heart; you came down only to watch the battle.' 29 David replied, 'What have I done now? Was it not just a question?' 30 Then he turned away to another man and asked the same question, and the people answered him as before. 31 When David's words were heard, they were reported to Saul, and he sent for him. 32 David said to Saul, 'Let no one lose heart because of this Philistine. Your servant will go and fight him.' 33 But Saul replied, 'You cannot go against this Philistine to fight him. You are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.' 34 David said to Saul, 'Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock,' 35 'I went after it, struck it, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its mane, struck it, and killed it.' 36 'Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.' 37 David added, 'The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.' Saul said to David, 'Go, and may the LORD be with you.' 38 Then Saul dressed David in his own garments, putting a bronze helmet on his head and dressing him in a coat of mail. 39 David strapped on his sword over the armor and tried to walk, but he was not used to them. He said to Saul, 'I cannot walk in these, for I have not tested them.' So David took them off. 40 He took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, placed them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag, and, with his sling in hand, approached the Philistine. 41 The Philistine came closer and closer to David, with his shield bearer walking in front of him. 42 When the Philistine looked and saw David, he despised him, for David was just a young man, ruddy and handsome in appearance. 43 The Philistine said to David, 'Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?' And he cursed David by his gods. 44 Then he said to David, 'Come here, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the field.' 45 David replied to the Philistine, 'You come against me with a sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.' 46 'Today, the LORD will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you down and cut off your head. I will give the corpses of the Philistines’ army today to the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.' 47 'And all those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle belongs to the LORD, and He will give you into our hands.' 48 When the Philistine arose and came forward to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 David reached into his bag, took out a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown to the ground. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone. Without a sword in his hand, he struck down the Philistine and killed him. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine. He took the Philistine’s sword, drew it from its sheath, and killed him by cutting off his head. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran. 52 The men of Israel and Judah rose up, shouted, and pursued the Philistines all the way to the entrance of the valley and to the gates of Ekron. The dead Philistines lay scattered along the road to Shaaraim, as far as Gath and Ekron. 53 Then the Israelites returned from pursuing the Philistines and plundered their camps. 54 David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he kept the Philistine's weapons in his tent. 55 When Saul saw David going out to confront the Philistine, he asked Abner, the commander of his army, 'Abner, whose son is this young man?' Abner replied, 'As surely as you live, O king, I do not know.' 56 The king said, 'Find out whose son this young man is.' 57 As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with the Philistine's head still in his hand. 58 Saul asked him, 'Whose son are you, young man?' David replied, 'I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.'

The bodies of the young men are holy even on ordinary missions, and all the more today.' 7 So the priest gave him the holy bread, since there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence that had been removed from before the Lord and replaced by hot bread on the day it was taken away. 8 Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the Lord; he was Doeg the Edomite, Saul’s chief shepherd. 9 David asked Ahimelech, 'Don’t you have a spear or a sword here? I haven’t brought my sword or any other weapon, because the king’s mission was urgent.' 10 The priest replied, 'The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want it, take it. There is no other here.' David said, 'There is none like it; give it to me.' 11 David got up and fled that day from Saul’s presence and went to Achish the king of Gath. 12 The servants of Achish said to him, 'Isn’t this David, the king of the land? Isn’t he the one they sing about in their dances, saying, "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands"?' 13 David took these words to heart and was very afraid of Achish king of Gath. 14 So he changed his behavior before them and acted like a madman in their presence. He made marks on the doors of the gate and let saliva run down his beard. 15 Achish said to his servants, 'Look at this man! He’s insane! Why bring him to me?
• 2 Sam 8:1-9 : 1 After this, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them; he took control of the bridle of the mother-city from the Philistines. 2 David also defeated Moab. He made them lie down on the ground and measured them with a rope. He measured two lengths of rope to put them to death and one full length to let them live, and the Moabites became servants to David, bringing him tribute. 3 David defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his control over the Euphrates River. 4 From Hadadezer, David captured a thousand chariots, seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung all the chariot horses but spared enough horses for a hundred chariots. 5 When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. 6 Then David stationed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became his servants, bringing tribute. The LORD gave David victory wherever he went. 7 David took the gold shields that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 From Betah and Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a great amount of bronze. 9 When Toi, king of Hamath, heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer, 10 he sent his son Joram to King David to ask for peace and to congratulate him on his victory over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Toi. Joram brought with him articles of silver, gold, and bronze. 11 King David dedicated these articles to the LORD, along with the silver and gold he had dedicated from all the nations he had subdued: 12 from Aram, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, Amalek, and the spoil of Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah. 13 David gained renown when he returned after striking down eighteen thousand Arameans in the Valley of Salt. 14 He stationed garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites became David's subjects. The LORD gave David victory wherever he went. 15 David reigned over all Israel, administering justice and righteousness to all his people. 16 Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder. 17 Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests, and Seraiah was the scribe. 18 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites, and David's sons were priests.

If you are repaying me, I will swiftly and speedily return your recompense upon your own heads. 5 For you took my silver and my gold and carried my precious treasures into your temples. 6 You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, removing them far from their own territory. 7 Behold, I am going to arouse them from the place where you sold them, and I will return your recompense upon your own heads. 8 I will sell your sons and daughters to the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans, a distant nation. The LORD has spoken. 9 Proclaim this among the nations: Prepare for war! Arouse the warriors! Let all the fighting men draw near and advance. 10 Hammer your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong!’ 11 Hasten and come, all you nations from every side, and gather yourselves there. Bring down, LORD, your mighty ones. 12 Let the nations be aroused; let them advance to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. 13 Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread the grapes, for the winepress is full and the vats overflow—because their wickedness is great. 14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will withdraw their brightness. 16 The LORD will roar from Zion and shout from Jerusalem; the heavens and the earth will tremble. But the LORD will be a refuge for his people and a stronghold for the children of Israel. 17 Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain. Jerusalem will be holy; never again will foreigners invade her. 18 In that day, the mountains will drip with sweet wine, the hills will flow with milk, and all the streams of Judah will run with water. A fountain will flow out of the house of the LORD and water the Valley of Acacias. 19 Egypt will become a desolate wasteland, and Edom a desert wilderness, because of the violence done to the people of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood. 20 Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem through all generations. 21 I will avenge their blood, which I have not yet avenged, for the LORD dwells in Zion.
• Amos 1:6-8 : 6 Thus says the LORD: 'For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not revoke punishment, because they deported an entire population to deliver them over to Edom.' 7 So I will send fire upon the wall of Gaza, and it will consume her palaces. 8 'I will cut off the inhabitants from Ashdod, and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon; I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,' says the Lord GOD.
• Zeph 2:4-7 : 4 For Gaza will be abandoned, and Ashkelon will become a ruin. At noon Ashdod will be driven out, and Ekron will be uprooted. 5 Woe to you who live by the sea, O nation of the Cherethites! The word of the Lord is against you, Canaan, land of the Philistines. I will destroy you, and there will be no inhabitants left. 6 The seacoast will become pasturelands, with meadows for shepherds and sheepfolds. 7 The land along the coast will belong to the remnant of the house of Judah; there they will graze. In the evening, they will lie down in the houses of Ashkelon. The Lord their God will care for them and restore their fortunes.
• Zech 9:5-8 : 5 Ashkelon will see it and be afraid; Gaza too, and will writhe in great anguish, and Ekron, because its hope will be disappointed. The king will perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon will no longer be inhabited. 6 A foreigner will dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. 7 I will remove the blood from their mouths and their detestable things from between their teeth. Those who are left will belong to our God; they will become like a clan leader in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusites. 8 I will encamp around my house as a guard against those who pass through or return, and no oppressor will invade them again, for now I will keep watch with my own eyes.
