Jephthah repeated all his words before the Lord in Mizpah. 12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites, asking, 'What do you have against me that you have come to fight against my land?'

But her husband Manoah was not with her. 10 The woman hurried and ran to tell her husband, saying to him, "Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me again." 11 Manoah got up, followed his wife, and came to the man and said to him, "Are you the man who spoke to my wife?" And he said, "I am." 12 Then Manoah said, "Now, when your words come true, what will be the rules for the boy's life and work?" 13 The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, "The woman must obey everything I told her. 14 She must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine, nor drink wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I commanded her." 15 Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, "Please stay here, and we will prepare a young goat for you." 16 The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, "Even if you detain me, I will not eat your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord." (Manoah did not know he was an angel of the Lord.)

However, the honor will not be yours on the journey you are about to take, for the LORD will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman." So Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh, and ten thousand men followed him on foot, and Deborah went up with him. 11 Meanwhile, Heber the Kenite had separated from the Kenites, the descendants of Hobab, the father-in-law of Moses, and pitched his tent near the great tree in Zaanannim, which is beside Kedesh. 12 When Sisera was told that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, 13 Sisera summoned all his chariots—nine hundred chariots made of iron—and all his troops who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the Kishon River. 14 Then Deborah said to Barak, "Get up! This is the day the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone ahead of you?" So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. 15 The LORD threw Sisera, all his chariots, and his entire army into confusion before Barak by the edge of the sword. Sisera got down from his chariot and fled on foot. 16 Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Harosheth-hagoyim, and the entire army of Sisera fell by the sword; not a single man was left. 17 Meanwhile, Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin, king of Hazor, and the family of Heber the Kenite. 18 Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, "Come, my lord, come right in. Don't be afraid." So he entered her tent, and she covered him with a blanket. 19 He said to her, "Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty." So she opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him again. 20 He said to her, "Stand at the entrance to the tent. If anyone comes and asks you, 'Is there a man here?' say, 'No.'" 21 But Jael, the wife of Heber, picked up a tent peg and a hammer, and she went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground—and he died. 22 Just then, Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. She said, "Come, and I will show you the man you're looking for." So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple—dead. 23 On that day God subdued Jabin, the king of Canaan, before the Israelites. 24 And the hand of the Israelites grew stronger and stronger against Jabin, the king of Canaan, until they destroyed him. 1 On that day, Deborah and Barak, the son of Abinoam, sang this song: 2 When the leaders in Israel take charge, when the people willingly offer themselves—praise the Lord! 3 Listen, kings! Pay attention, rulers! I will sing to the Lord; I will make music to the Lord, the God of Israel. 4 O Lord, when You went out from Seir, when You marched from the fields of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens poured down, the clouds poured down water. 5 The mountains melted before the Lord, even Sinai, before the Lord, the God of Israel. 6 In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned; travelers took to winding paths. 7 Village life in Israel ceased, ceased until I, Deborah, arose, a mother in Israel. 8 When they chose new gods, then war came to the city gates. Not a shield or spear was seen among forty thousand in Israel. 9 My heart is with Israel’s commanders, with the willing volunteers among the people. Praise the Lord! 10 You who ride on white donkeys, sitting on rich carpets, and you who walk along the road, think about this: 11 The voices of the archers at the watering places recount the righteous acts of the Lord, the righteous acts of His villagers in Israel. Then the people of the Lord went down to the city gates. 12 Awake, awake, Deborah! Awake, awake, sing a song! Arise, Barak! Take captive your captives, son of Abinoam. 13 Then the survivors came down to the nobles; the people of the Lord came down to me against the mighty. 14 From Ephraim came those whose roots were in Amalek; Benjamin was with the people who followed you. From Machir, commanders marched down; from Zebulun, those who wield the staff of office. 15 The princes of Issachar were with Deborah; yes, Issachar was with Barak, sent into the valley under his command. In the districts of Reuben, there was much searching of heart. 16 Why did you stay among the sheepfolds to hear the whistling for the flocks? In the districts of Reuben, there was much searching of heart. 17 Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan; and Dan, why did he linger by the ships? Asher remained on the seashore and stayed in his coves. 18 Zebulun risked his life to the point of death, and Naphtali, too, on the heights of the battlefield. 19 Kings came, they fought; the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo. They took no plunder of silver. 20 From the heavens the stars fought; from their courses, they fought against Sisera. 21 The river Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the river Kishon. March on, my soul, in strength! 22 Then the hoofs of horses hammered—galloping, galloping of their mighty steeds. 23 'Curse Meroz,' said the angel of the Lord. 'Curse its inhabitants bitterly, because they did not come to help the Lord, to help the Lord against the mighty.' 24 Most blessed of women be Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women. 25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk; in a bowl fit for nobles, she brought him curd. 26 She reached for the tent peg, her right hand for the workman's hammer. She struck Sisera, she crushed his head, she shattered and pierced his temple. 27 At her feet he sank, he fell, there he lay. At her feet he sank, he fell; where he sank, there he fell—dead. 28 Through the window peered Sisera's mother; behind the lattice she cried out, 'Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why is the clatter of his chariots delayed?' 29 Her wisest ladies answer her; indeed, she keeps saying to herself, 30 'Are they not finding and dividing the spoils: a girl or two for each man, colorful garments for Sisera, colorful garments embroidered, highly embroidered garments for my neck—all this as plunder?' 31 So may all Your enemies perish, O Lord! But may those who love You be like the sun when it rises in its strength. And the land was at peace for forty years. 1 The Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord handed them over to Midian for seven years. 2 Midian's power overwhelmed Israel, and because of Midian, the Israelites made hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds. 3 Whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people of the east would come up and attack them. 4 They camped against them and destroyed the crops of the land all the way to Gaza, leaving nothing for the Israelites to live on—not even sheep, cattle, or donkeys. 5 For they came with their livestock and tents, like swarms of locusts in number. Both they and their camels were too many to count, and they invaded the land to devastate it. 6 So Israel was brought very low because of Midian, and the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help. 7 When the Israelites cried out to the Lord because of Midian, 8 the Lord sent a prophet to the Israelites, who said to them, 'This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt and out of the house of slavery.

But if I defeat him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us. 10 The Philistine continued, 'I defy the armies of Israel this day. Give me a man so we can fight each other.' 11 When Saul and all Israel heard the words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid. 12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite man named Jesse from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul's time, he was old and advanced in years. 13 Jesse's three oldest sons had followed Saul to the battle. The names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab, the firstborn; Abinadab, the second; and Shammah, the third. 14 David was the youngest, and the three oldest had followed Saul. 15 But David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep in Bethlehem. 16 The Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand for forty days. 17 Jesse said to his son David, 'Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp.' 18 Also take these ten cuts of cheese to the commander of their unit. Check on the well-being of your brothers and bring back some assurance from them.

Why are you setting a trap for my life to bring about my death?" 10 Saul swore to her by the LORD, "As surely as the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this." 11 Then the woman asked, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" Saul answered, "Bring up Samuel for me." 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!" 13 The king said to her, "Do not be afraid. What do you see?" The woman said to Saul, "I see a spirit coming up out of the earth." 14 Saul asked her, "What does he look like?" She replied, "An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe." Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground in reverence. 15 Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" Saul answered, "I am deeply distressed. The Philistines are waging war against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, not by prophets or by dreams. Therefore, I have called upon you to tell me what I should do." 16 Samuel said, "Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and has become your enemy? 17 The LORD has done as he spoke through me. He has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 18 Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD or carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, the LORD has done this to you today. 19 Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines. Tomorrow, you and your sons will be with me, and the LORD will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines. 20 Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, paralyzed with fear because of Samuel's words. There was no strength left in him, for he had not eaten anything all day and all night. 21 When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly distressed, she said to him, "Behold, your servant has obeyed you. I have taken my life in my hands and done as you requested. 22 Now please listen to your servant and let me set a piece of bread before you to eat, so you may have strength when you go on your way." 23 But he refused and said, "I will not eat." However, his servants together with the woman urged him, and he listened to them. He got up from the ground and sat on the bed. 24 The woman had a fattened calf in the house. She hurried to slaughter it. Then she took flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread. 25 She served it to Saul and his servants, and they ate. Afterward, they got up and left that night.
