  • Ps 78:1-9 : 1 A teaching of Asaph. Listen, my people, to my instruction; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter mysteries from ancient times. 3 Things we have heard and known, which our ancestors have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, but will tell the next generation the praises of the Lord, His strength, and the wonders He has done. 5 He established a testimony in Jacob and set a law in Israel, which He commanded our ancestors to teach their children, 6 so that the next generation would know them—children yet to be born—and in turn they would rise and tell their children, 7 so they would put their trust in God and not forget His deeds but keep His commandments. 8 They would not be like their ancestors—a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal, whose spirits were not faithful to God. 9 The sons of Ephraim, armed with bows, turned back on the day of battle. 10 They did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by His teachings. 11 They forgot His deeds and the wonders He had shown them. 12 He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors, in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. 13 He divided the sea and let them pass through it; He made the waters stand like a wall. 14 By day He led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire. 15 He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them water as abundant as the depths. 16 He brought streams out of the rock and made water flow down like rivers. 17 But they continued to sin against Him, rebelling against the Most High in the dry wasteland. 18 They tested God in their hearts by demanding the food they craved. 19 They spoke against God, saying, 'Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?' 20 True, He struck the rock, and water gushed out, and streams overflowed. But can He also give us bread or provide meat for His people? 21 Therefore, when the Lord heard this, He became furious; a fire was kindled against Jacob, and His anger rose against Israel. 22 For they did not believe in God or trust in His salvation. 23 Yet He commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven. 24 He rained down manna for them to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. 25 Man ate the bread of angels; He sent them food to their fill. 26 He made the east wind blow in the heavens and guided the south wind by His power. 27 He rained meat on them like dust, birds like the sand of the sea. 28 He made them fall inside their camp, all around their dwellings. 29 They ate and were filled abundantly, for He gave them what they craved. 30 But while the food was still in their mouths, they were not yet free of their craving. 31 Then the anger of God rose against them, and He killed the strongest among them, striking down the young men of Israel. 32 Despite all this, they kept on sinning and did not believe in His wondrous works. 33 So He ended their days in futility and their years in terror. 34 When He killed them, they sought Him; they repented and earnestly sought God. 35 They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their Redeemer. 36 But they deceived Him with their mouths and lied to Him with their tongues. 37 Their hearts were not faithful to Him, nor were they loyal to His covenant. 38 Yet He, being compassionate, forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them. Time and again, He restrained His anger and did not stir up His full wrath. 39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return. 40 How often they provoked Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the wasteland! 41 Again and again they tested God and limited the Holy One of Israel. 42 They did not remember His power—the day He redeemed them from their enemy, 43 when He displayed His signs in Egypt, His wonders in the fields of Zoan. 44 He turned their rivers to blood, and they could not drink from their streams. 45 He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them. 46 He gave their crops to the caterpillar and the fruit of their labor to the locust. 47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore trees with frost. 48 He gave over their cattle to the hail and their livestock to lightning. 49 He unleashed His burning anger, fury, rage, and hostility—a band of destroying angels. 50 He prepared a path for His anger; He did not spare them from death but delivered their lives to the plague. 51 He struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham. 52 But He led His people like sheep and guided them like a flock in the wilderness. 53 He led them safely, so they were unafraid, but the sea covered their enemies. 54 He brought them to His holy border, to the mountain His right hand had acquired. 55 He drove out nations before them and apportioned their inheritance with a measuring line; He settled the tribes of Israel in their tents. 56 But they tested and rebelled against God Most High and did not keep His decrees. 57 They turned back and were disloyal like their ancestors; they became twisted like a deceitful bow. 58 They angered Him with their high places and provoked His jealousy with their carved images. 59 When God heard this, He became furious and greatly rejected Israel. 60 He abandoned the tabernacle at Shiloh, the tent where He had dwelled among humanity. 61 He gave His strength into captivity and His beauty into the hand of the adversary. 62 He handed His people over to the sword, and His inheritance became the object of His fury. 63 Fire consumed their young men, and their virgins were not given in marriage. 64 Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows could not weep. 65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a warrior recovering from wine. 66 He struck His enemies backward and covered them with everlasting disgrace. 67 He rejected the tent of Joseph and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim. 68 But He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved. 69 He built His sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that He established forever. 70 He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds. 71 From tending the nursing ewes, He brought him to shepherd Jacob, His people, and Israel, His inheritance. 72 He shepherded them with a heart of integrity and guided them with the skillfulness of his hands.

  • Dan 9:6-9 : 6 We have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our rulers, our ancestors, and to all the people of the land. 7 Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but shame covers our faces today—to the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where You have driven them because of their unfaithfulness to You. 8 O LORD, shame covers us—our kings, our rulers, and our ancestors—because we have sinned against You. 9 The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against Him. 10 We have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God by following His instructions, which He gave us through His servants the prophets. 11 All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to obey Your voice. So the curse and oath written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us because we have sinned against Him. 12 He has carried out His words that He spoke against us and our rulers who governed us, bringing on us a great disaster. Nothing like it has ever been done under the entire heaven as what has been done in Jerusalem. 13 As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our sins and gaining insight into Your truth. 14 Therefore, the LORD has kept the disaster in store and brought it upon us, for the LORD our God is righteous in everything He does, yet we have not obeyed His voice. 15 Now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and made a name for Yourself that endures to this day, we have sinned and acted wickedly.

  • Ps 105:1-9 : 1 Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name, make His deeds known among the nations. 2 Sing to Him, make music for Him, tell of all His wonderful works. 3 Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. 4 Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His presence continually. 5 Remember the wonders He has done, His miracles, and the judgments He has spoken. 6 Descendants of Abraham, His servant, children of Jacob, His chosen ones. 7 He is the LORD our God; His judgments are in all the earth. 8 He remembers His covenant forever, the word He commanded for a thousand generations. 9 The covenant He made with Abraham, and His oath to Isaac. 10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant. 11 Saying, 'To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.' 12 When they were few in number, very few, and strangers in the land. 13 They wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people. 14 He allowed no one to oppress them; He rebuked kings on their account. 15 'Do not touch My anointed ones, and do not harm My prophets.' 16 He called famine upon the land; He broke the supply of bread. 17 He sent a man ahead of them—Joseph, who was sold as a slave. 18 They afflicted his feet with shackles; his soul was laid in iron chains. 19 Until the time his word came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him. 20 The king sent and released him; the ruler of the nations set him free. 21 He made him lord of his household and ruler of all his possessions. 22 To bind his officials as he desired and to teach his elders wisdom. 23 Then Israel came to Egypt; Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham. 24 The LORD made his people very fruitful and made them stronger than their adversaries. 25 He turned their hearts to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants. 26 He sent Moses his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. 27 They performed his signs among them and his wonders in the land of Ham. 28 He sent darkness and made it dark, and they did not rebel against his words. 29 He turned their waters into blood, and he killed their fish. 30 Their land teemed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings. 31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies and gnats throughout their territory. 32 He gave them hail for rain, and lightning that flashed through their land. 33 He struck down their vines and fig trees and shattered the trees of their territory. 34 He spoke, and locusts came, young locusts without number. 35 They ate up all the vegetation in their land and consumed the fruit of their ground. 36 He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their strength. 37 Then he brought them out with silver and gold, and none among his tribes stumbled. 38 Egypt was glad when they departed, for dread of them had fallen upon them. 39 He spread a cloud as a covering and fire to give light at night. 40 They asked, and he brought quail; he satisfied them with the bread of heaven. 41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed like a river in the desert. 42 For he remembered his holy promise given to Abraham his servant. 43 He brought out his people with rejoicing, his chosen ones with joyful singing. 44 He gave them the lands of the nations, and they inherited what others had worked for, 45 so that they might keep His statutes and observe His laws. Praise the LORD!
  • Neh 9:7-9 : 7 You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham. 8 You found his heart faithful before You, and You made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites to his descendants. And You have kept Your promise because You are righteous. 9 You saw the oppression of our ancestors in Egypt and heard their cry at the Red Sea. 10 You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the people of his land, for You knew how arrogantly they treated them. And You made a name for Yourself that endures to this day. 11 You divided the sea before them, and they passed through it on dry ground. But You cast their pursuers into the depths like a stone into mighty waters. 12 By day, You led them with a pillar of cloud and by night with a pillar of fire, to give them light for the path they should follow. 13 You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke to them from heaven. You gave them upright judgments, true laws, good statutes, and commandments. 14 You made Your holy Sabbath known to them, and You gave them commandments, statutes, and laws through Your servant Moses. 15 You provided bread from heaven for their hunger and brought water out of a rock for their thirst. You told them to go in and take possession of the land You had sworn to give them. 16 But they, our ancestors, acted arrogantly. They stiffened their necks and did not obey Your commandments. 17 They refused to listen and did not remember the wonders You performed among them. They stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abundant in faithful love, and You did not abandon them. 18 Even when they made a molten calf for themselves and said, 'This is your god who brought you out of Egypt,' and they committed terrible blasphemies, 19 You, in Your great mercy, did not abandon them in the wilderness. During the day, the pillar of cloud did not depart to guide them on their way, nor did the pillar of fire by night to give them light for the path they should take. 20 You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold manna from their mouths, and You provided water for their thirst. 21 For forty years You sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell. 22 You gave them kingdoms and nations, dividing them into regions. They took possession of the land of Sihon, the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og, king of Bashan. 23 You multiplied their descendants like the stars of heaven and brought them to the land You had promised their ancestors they would enter and take possession of. 24 Their descendants went in and took possession of the land. You subdued the inhabitants of the land—the Canaanites—before them and handed their kings and the peoples of the land over to them, to do with as they desired. 25 They captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took possession of houses filled with every good thing, hewn cisterns, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. They ate, were satisfied, grew fat, and delighted themselves in Your great goodness. 26 But they were disobedient and rebelled against You. They cast Your law behind their backs and killed Your prophets who warned them to turn back to You. They committed terrible blasphemies. 27 So You handed them over to their enemies, who oppressed them. But in their time of distress, they cried out to You, and You heard from heaven. In Your great mercy, You gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies. 28 But as soon as they had rest, they returned to doing evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to their enemies, who ruled over them. Yet when they again cried out to You, You heard from heaven and rescued them many times in Your abundant mercy. 29 You warned them to return to Your law, but they acted arrogantly and did not obey Your commandments. They sinned against Your judgments, which, if a person does, they will live by them. Stubbornly, they turned their backs, stiffened their necks, and would not listen. 30 For many years, You were patient with them. You warned them by Your Spirit through Your prophets, yet they would not listen. So You gave them into the hands of the peoples of the lands. 31 Still, in Your great mercies, You did not utterly destroy them or abandon them, for You are a gracious and merciful God. 32 Now therefore, our God, the great, mighty, and awesome God who keeps His covenant and steadfast love, do not let the hardship that has come upon us—on our kings, leaders, priests, prophets, ancestors, and on all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today—seem insignificant to You. 33 You are righteous in all that has happened to us, because You have acted faithfully while we have acted wickedly. 34 Our kings, leaders, priests, and ancestors did not obey Your law or pay attention to Your commandments and warnings You gave them. 35 Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying Your abundant goodness and the spacious, fertile land You gave them, they did not serve You or turn from their evil deeds. 36 Here we are today, slaves in the land You gave to our ancestors so they could enjoy its fruit and its goodness—here we are, slaves in it! 37 Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress.
