  • Matt 13:1-9 : 1 On that day, Jesus left the house and sat by the sea. 2 Large crowds gathered around him, so he got into a boat and sat down. Meanwhile, the entire crowd stood on the shore. 3 Then he spoke many things to them in parables, saying, "Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 As he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and ate them. 5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where there was not much soil. They sprouted quickly because the soil was not deep. 6 But when the sun rose, they were scorched, and since they had no roots, they withered away. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns, which grew up and choked them. 8 Still other seeds fell on good soil and yielded a crop—some one hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times what was sown. 9 Let anyone who has ears listen. 10 Then the disciples approached him and asked, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" 11 Jesus replied, "The mysteries of the kingdom of heaven have been given to you to know, but not to them. 12 For whoever has, more will be given to them, and they will have abundance. But whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken away from them. 13 That is why I speak to them in parables, because although they see, they do not see; and although they hear, they do not hear or understand. 14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says: 'You will indeed hear but never understand; you will indeed see but never perceive.' 15 For the heart of this people has grown dull; they can barely hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise, they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, turn back to me, and I would heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. 17 Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
  • Matt 13:34-35 : 34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 'I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.'
  • Luke 8:10 : 10 And He said, "The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to others, I speak in parables so that, ‘Though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’
