  • Luke 24:1-9 : 1 On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared, and some other women were with them. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly, two men stood by them in dazzling garments. 5 The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why are you looking for the living one among the dead?" 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 "The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and on the third day rise again." 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who were telling these things to the apostles. 11 But their words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. 12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there by themselves, and he went away, wondering what had happened. 13 On that same day, two of them were walking to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about all the things that had happened. 15 As they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and began to walk with them. 16 But their eyes were restrained, so they did not recognize him. 17 He asked them, "What are you discussing as you walk along?" They stopped, looking sad. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, replied, "Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know what has happened in these days?" 19 He asked, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. What is more, it is the third day since all this happened. 22 In addition, some women of our group amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning, 23 but did not find his body. They came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him. 25 He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" 33 They got up at once and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven and those with them, assembled together. 34 They were saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon." 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. 36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?" 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and some honeycomb, 43 and he took it and ate it before them. 44 He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms." 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day. 47 And repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high. 50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and raising his hands, he blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he departed from them and was taken up to heaven. 52 And they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
  • John 20:1-9 : 1 On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and she saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and she said to them, 'They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have put him.' 3 Then Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. 4 The two of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent down and looked inside, and he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter arrived, following him, and he went into the tomb. He saw the linen wraps lying there. 7 He also saw the face cloth that had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen wraps, but folded up separately in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside, and he saw and believed. 9 For they still did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. 11 Mary, however, stood outside the tomb, weeping. As she wept, she bent down to look into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 The angels said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping?' She said to them, 'Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.' 14 After saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, 'Woman, why are you crying? Whom are you seeking?' Thinking he was the gardener, she said to him, 'Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him.' 16 Jesus said to her, 'Mary.' She turned and said to him in Aramaic, 'Rabboni!' (which means 'Teacher'). 17 Jesus said to her, 'Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, "I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God."' 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord!' and she told them what he had said to her. 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, with the doors locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, 'Peace be with you.' 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I am also sending you.'
