Then Moses reported the people's words to the LORD. 10 The LORD said to Moses, 'Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their garments. 11 They must be prepared for the third day, because on the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai. 12 Set boundaries for the people all around, saying, 'Be careful not to go up the mountain or touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain must surely be put to death. 13 No hand is to touch it; anyone who touches it must be stoned or shot with arrows. Whether animal or human, they must not be allowed to live.' Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they go up the mountain. 14 Moses went down from the mountain to the people, consecrated them, and they washed their garments. 15 He said to the people, 'Be ready by the third day; do not go near a woman.' 16 On the morning of the third day, there was thunder and lightning, a thick cloud on the mountain, and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. Its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in the thunder. 20 The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. Then the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way, I will test them to see whether they will follow my instructions or not. 5 On the sixth day, they are to prepare what they bring in, and it will be twice as much as they gather on other days. 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, "In the evening, you will know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning, you will see the glory of the LORD, because He has heard your complaints against Him. Who are we that you complain against us?" 8 And Moses added, "The LORD will give you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because He has heard your complaints against Him. But who are we? Your complaints are not against us but against the LORD." 9 Then Moses said to Aaron, "Tell the entire assembly of the Israelites, 'Come before the LORD, for He has heard your complaints.'" 10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole assembly of the Israelites, they turned toward the wilderness, and there was the glory of the LORD appearing in the cloud. 11 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 12 "I have heard the complaints of the Israelites. Tell them, 'At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.'" 13 That evening, quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning, there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 When the dew evaporated, there was a fine, flaky substance on the surface of the wilderness, as fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" because they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, "It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. 16 This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Each person is to gather as much as they need to eat. Take an omer for each person according to the number of people in your tent.' 17 The Israelites did as they were told. Some gathered much, and some gathered little.

In that case, they camped at the LORD's command and then set out at the LORD's command. 21 Sometimes the cloud remained only from evening until morning, and when the cloud lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, when the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether it remained for two days, a month, or longer, as long as the cloud rested over the tabernacle, the people of Israel remained camped and did not set out. But when it lifted, they set out. 23 At the command of the LORD, they camped, and at the command of the LORD, they set out. They kept the LORD's charge according to the command of the LORD given through Moses.

It tasted like a cake baked with the richness of oil. 9 When the dew came down on the camp at night, the manna would fall with it. 10 Moses heard the people weeping throughout their clans, each at the entry of his tent. The anger of the LORD burned greatly, and Moses was very displeased. 11 So Moses said to the LORD, 'Why have You brought trouble on Your servant? Why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You lay the burden of all these people on me? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give birth to them? Why do You tell me to carry them in my arms, like a nurse carries an infant, to the land You promised their ancestors? 13 Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep crying to me, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If this is how You are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me—if I have found favor in Your eyes—and do not let me see my misery. 16 The LORD said to Moses, 'Gather seventy men from the elders of Israel whom you know to be leaders of the people and their officials. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting, and have them stand there with you.' 17 I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it alone. 18 Tell the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat. The LORD heard you when you wailed, ‘If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!’ Now the LORD will give you meat to eat, and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten, or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you—because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have wailed before Him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’ 21 But Moses said, 'Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and You say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month’? 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Or if all the fish in the sea were gathered for them, would that be enough?' 23 The LORD answered Moses, 'Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.' 24 So Moses went out and told the people what the LORD had said. He gathered seventy of their elders and had them stand around the Tent. 25 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but they never did so again. 26 Two men, Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders but had not gone out to the Tent. Yet the Spirit rested on them as well, and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and reported to Moses, 'Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!' 28 Then Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' assistant since his youth, spoke up and said, 'My lord Moses, stop them!' 29 But Moses replied, 'Are you jealous on my behalf? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put His Spirit on them!' 30 Then Moses returned to the camp along with the elders of Israel. 31 Now a wind sent by the LORD drove in quail from the sea and scattered them around the camp to a depth of about two cubits over the ground, as far as a day's walk in any direction around the camp. 32 All that day, night, and the following day, the people went out and gathered quail. The one who gathered the least still collected ten homers. Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it was consumed, the anger of the LORD burned against the people, and He struck them with a severe plague. 34 So they named that place Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had craved meat. 35 From Kibroth Hattaavah, the people journeyed to Hazeroth and stayed there.

Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to return to Egypt? 4 And they said to each other, "Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt. 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown before the entire assembly of the Israelite community. 6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes. 7 And they said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. 8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us—a land flowing with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them. Their protection is gone, and the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them. 10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all the signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, and I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they. 13 But Moses said to the LORD, "The Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. 14 They will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, LORD, are among these people, that you, LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 15 If you put all these people to death as one man, the nations who have heard about your fame will say, 16 'The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.' 17 Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 'The LORD is slow to anger, abundant in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and rebellion; yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers' iniquity upon the children to the third and fourth generation.' 19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now. 20 The LORD replied, 'I have forgiven them, as you asked.' 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, 22 none of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times, 23 not one of them will see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has spurned me will see it. 24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and has followed me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. 25 The Amalekites and Canaanites are dwelling in the valley. Tomorrow, turn around and set out toward the wilderness along the way of the Red Sea. 26 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 27 How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of the Israelites, who are murmuring against me. 28 Say to them: 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say in my hearing.' 29 In this wilderness, your dead bodies will fall—every one of you who was numbered in the census, twenty years old or more, who grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore by uplifted hand to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 31 But your children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them in to know the land that you have rejected. 32 As for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, bearing the consequences of your unfaithfulness, until your corpses are consumed in the wilderness. 34 For forty days you explored the land; now, for each day, you will bear your guilt for a year—forty years—and you will know my opposition. 35 I, the LORD, have spoken. I will surely do this to this entire wicked community who conspired against me; they will meet their end in this wilderness, and here they will die. 36 The men whom Moses had sent to explore the land, and who returned and caused the whole assembly to complain by spreading a bad report about the land— 37 those men who spread the bad report about the land were struck down by a plague before the LORD. 38 But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, survived. 39 When Moses relayed these words to all the Israelites, the people mourned greatly. 40 Early the next morning they set out toward the top of the hill and said, 'Here we are! We are ready to go up to the place the LORD promised, for we have sinned.' 41 But Moses said, 'Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed. 42 Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you; you will be defeated by your enemies.' 43 For the Amalekites and Canaanites are there to confront you, and you will fall by the sword. Because you have turned away from the LORD, He will not be with you. 44 Nevertheless, in their presumption, they went up toward the top of the hill, but neither the ark of the LORD's covenant nor Moses moved from the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down, attacked them, and routed them as far as Hormah.

The one He chooses, He will bring near to Himself. 6 "Do this: Take censers for yourselves, Korah and all your followers. 7 Put fire in them and place incense on them in the presence of the Lord tomorrow. The man the Lord chooses will be the holy one. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!" 8 Moses also said to Korah, "Listen now, you sons of Levi! 9 Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the rest of the Israelite community to bring you near to Himself to do the work of the Lord's tabernacle and to stand before the assembly to minister to them? 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near to Him, but now you are demanding the priesthood as well! 11 Therefore, it is against the Lord that you and all your followers have gathered. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?" 12 Then Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, "We will not come! 13 Isn't it enough that you brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Must you also lord it over us? 14 What's more, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor have you given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you intend to gouge out the eyes of these men? We will not come!" 15 Moses was very angry and said to the Lord, "Do not accept their offering. I have not taken even a single donkey from them, nor have I wronged any one of them." 16 Moses said to Korah, "You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you, they, and Aaron. 17 Each man is to take his censer, put incense in it, and present it before the Lord—250 censers in all. You and Aaron are also to do the same, each with his censer.

They fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them. 7 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 8 "Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to the rock in front of them, and it will yield its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community and their livestock to drink." 9 So Moses took the staff from the LORD's presence, just as he was commanded. 10 He and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, "Listen now, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?" 11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff.
