Israel camped in front of the mountain. 3 Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, "This is what you shall say to the house of Jacob and declare to the children of Israel: 4 'You have seen what I did to Egypt and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself. 5 Now, if you will carefully listen to My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations, for the whole earth is Mine. 6 You will be for Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites. 7 So Moses came and summoned the elders of the people. He set before them all the words that the LORD had commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, saying, 'We will do everything the LORD has spoken.' Moses brought their words back to the LORD. 9 The LORD said to Moses, 'Behold, I am coming to you in a dense cloud so that the people may hear when I speak with you and may always believe in you.' Then Moses reported the people's words to the LORD. 10 The LORD said to Moses, 'Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their garments. 11 They must be prepared for the third day, because on the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai. 12 Set boundaries for the people all around, saying, 'Be careful not to go up the mountain or touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain must surely be put to death. 13 No hand is to touch it; anyone who touches it must be stoned or shot with arrows. Whether animal or human, they must not be allowed to live.' Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they go up the mountain. 14 Moses went down from the mountain to the people, consecrated them, and they washed their garments. 15 He said to the people, 'Be ready by the third day; do not go near a woman.' 16 On the morning of the third day, there was thunder and lightning, a thick cloud on the mountain, and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. Its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in the thunder. 20 The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. Then the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

They did not walk in my statutes, and they did not keep my ordinances to obey them, though by them a person will live. They profaned my Sabbaths, so I said I would pour out my wrath on them and unleash my anger against them in the wilderness.
