Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle. 25 This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon all the peoples under the heavens. When they hear reports of you, they will tremble and be in anguish because of you.' 26 Then I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 'Let me pass through your land. I will travel only on the road and will turn neither to the right nor to the left. 28 You can sell me food for silver so that I may eat, and give me water for silver so that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot— 29 as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me—until I cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving us.' 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through his land, for the LORD your God had hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, so that He might deliver him into your hands, as has now happened. 31 Then the LORD said to me, 'See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land to you. Begin to take possession of it, that you may inherit his land.' 32 So Sihon came out with all his people to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33 And the LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we struck him down along with his sons and his whole army. 34 At that time we captured all his cities and completely destroyed every city, including the men, women, and children; we left no survivors. 35 Only the livestock and the plunder from the cities we took as spoil for ourselves.
