You are to send one man from each ancestral tribe, each one a leader among them. 3 So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran at the LORD’s command. All of them were men who were leaders of the Israelites. 4 These were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori; 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi; 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. Moses called Hoshea son of Nun, Joshua. 17 When Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, he said to them, “Go up through the Negev and then into the hill country. 18 See what the land is like, and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 Is the land they live in good or bad? Are the towns they dwell in unwalled or fortified? 20 And what is the land like—is it fertile or barren? Does it have trees or not? Be courageous, and bring back some of the fruit of the land.” It was the season for the first ripe grapes. 21 So they went up and explored the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath. 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, descendants of Anak, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch with a single cluster of grapes. They carried it on a pole between two of them, along with some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days, they returned from exploring the land. 26 They came back to Moses, Aaron, and the entire assembly of the Israelites at Kadesh in the Wilderness of Paran. There they reported to them and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and indeed it flows with milk and honey. Here is its fruit. 28 However, the people who live there are strong, and the cities are large and very fortified. We even saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan. 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people, for they are stronger than we are." 32 And they spread a bad report about the land they had explored among the Israelites, saying, "The land we explored devours those who live in it, and all the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We even saw the Nephilim there—the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim. To ourselves, we seemed like grasshoppers, and we seemed the same to them." 1 Then the entire assembly raised their voices and cried, and the people wept throughout that night. 2 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole community said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt or in this wilderness! 3 Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to return to Egypt? 4 And they said to each other, "Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.
  • Num 14:10-41 : 10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all the signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, and I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they. 13 But Moses said to the LORD, "The Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. 14 They will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, LORD, are among these people, that you, LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 15 If you put all these people to death as one man, the nations who have heard about your fame will say, 16 'The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath, so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.' 17 Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 'The LORD is slow to anger, abundant in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and rebellion; yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers' iniquity upon the children to the third and fourth generation.' 19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now. 20 The LORD replied, 'I have forgiven them, as you asked.' 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, 22 none of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times, 23 not one of them will see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has spurned me will see it. 24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and has followed me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. 25 The Amalekites and Canaanites are dwelling in the valley. Tomorrow, turn around and set out toward the wilderness along the way of the Red Sea. 26 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 27 How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of the Israelites, who are murmuring against me. 28 Say to them: 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you exactly as I heard you say in my hearing.' 29 In this wilderness, your dead bodies will fall—every one of you who was numbered in the census, twenty years old or more, who grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore by uplifted hand to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 31 But your children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them in to know the land that you have rejected. 32 As for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, bearing the consequences of your unfaithfulness, until your corpses are consumed in the wilderness. 34 For forty days you explored the land; now, for each day, you will bear your guilt for a year—forty years—and you will know my opposition. 35 I, the LORD, have spoken. I will surely do this to this entire wicked community who conspired against me; they will meet their end in this wilderness, and here they will die. 36 The men whom Moses had sent to explore the land, and who returned and caused the whole assembly to complain by spreading a bad report about the land— 37 those men who spread the bad report about the land were struck down by a plague before the LORD. 38 But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, survived. 39 When Moses relayed these words to all the Israelites, the people mourned greatly. 40 Early the next morning they set out toward the top of the hill and said, 'Here we are! We are ready to go up to the place the LORD promised, for we have sinned.' 41 But Moses said, 'Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed.
  • Deut 1:19-33 : 19 Then we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us. And we came to Kadesh-barnea. 20 Then I said to you, 'You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving us.' 21 See, the LORD your God has set the land before you. Go up and take possession of it, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. Do not be afraid or discouraged. 22 Then all of you approached me and said, 'Let us send men ahead of us to explore the land and bring back a report about the route we should take and the cities we will come to.' 23 The idea seemed good to me, so I selected twelve men from among you, one man for each tribe. 24 They set out and went up into the hill country, and they came to the Valley of Eshkol and explored it. 25 Taking with them some of the fruit of the land, they brought it back to us. And they reported, 'The land that the LORD our God is giving us is good.' 26 But you were unwilling to go up; you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. 27 You grumbled in your tents and said, 'Because the LORD hates us, He brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.' 28 Where can we go? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying, 'The people are larger and taller than we are, the cities are great and fortified up to the heavens, and we even saw the descendants of the Anakim there.' 29 Then I said to you, 'Do not be terrified or afraid of them.' 30 The LORD your God, who goes before you, will fight for you, just as He did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes. 31 And in the wilderness, where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way you went, until you came to this place. 32 But in this matter, you did not trust in the LORD your God, 33 who went before you on the way to scout out a place for you to camp, by night in the fire to show you the way you should go, and by day in the cloud.
