Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.

30But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through his land, for the LORD your God had hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, so that He might deliver him into your hands, as has now happened.
5For the LORD had said to Moses, 'Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you for even a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments, and I will decide what to do with you.’
8You found his heart faithful before You, and You made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites to his descendants. And You have kept Your promise because You are righteous.

13then you can be certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land the LORD your God has given you.

17If you say in your heart, 'These nations are too numerous for me; how can I drive them out?'
23then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and stronger than you.
13I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities you did not build. You are living in them and eating from vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.
10When the LORD your God brings you into the land He swore to your ancestors—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—to give to you, with cities great and good that you did not build,
